Description

Carla strolled up to the walk-thru with a couple of whining kids in tow and a highly detailed and complex order written on a dirty paper napkin with a blue ballpoint pen that was terrifyingly low on ink.

The window was wide and sleepy-looking. It stretched a bit as they approached. Victor, a young, bored, teenage slacker manned the counter behind the window with very little pride and very little care. He attempted to smile as Carla approached, but his face instead molded into the usual permasmile. He could feel it in his jaws; it was like a whole new notch that his cheeks slid into. It hurt. He wished he had a piece of gum or something.

"Hello, yes... hello. May I take your..." Victor was interrupted by a piercingly loud demand for barbecue sauce by one of Carla's young'ins, who clustered around the hem of her robe like a bunch of shiny black leeches. In fact, they very well might have been leeches, if that their lust for junk food was replaced by a lust for blood. Judging by their teeth, though, Victor thought they might have a taste for both.

Carla snapped into her usual business-like voice and begin listing off of the items on the napkin. Victor plunked a few keys on his computer console and printed out a small green reciept. The cash register groaned loudly as he pulled out the money drawer and handed Carla a worn paper bill. Carla placed it in her purse gingerly, and clasping her hands together, leaned on the counter and waited for the food to arrive.

Victor walked around to the back of the establishment where the sweaty cook was sitting on a small iron stool. He was dipping a few large baskets of frozen flies into a cauldron-like container of boiling oil. The flies sizzled and popped tantalizingly, and Victor scooped up a few of them and placed them into some neat paper boxes with a large green "w" and a few slogans adorning them. One of the flies was still wriggling. Victor grabbed it by one of its forelegs and plopped it into his mouth. Better than violating a health code and getting fired, he thought. Then he might be stuck with a worse job. He brought the food back to the counter where Carla stood; she graciously accepted it and walked away.

Victor straightened the collar of his shirt and brushed a few bits of wing away from the corners of his mouth. There was a long amber grease stain going down the side of his pants. He leaned out the window and, looking out into the dim and distant purple lights of the city, wished he had a better job.

Dark and beautiful as always. :) Hi Glome, stopping by to say hi and wanted to check out more of your work. You're continuing to do such a great job on everything and I'm always so amazed and admire you - for your art and your writing, and your unique and very interesting style.

I like this piece. The world you create and the characters in it are very different yet very familiar. It's like you create a fantasy world significantly different for us to get lost in, yet something that's still familiar enough for us to connect to.

Great job as always. Take care Glome. :)
